Making a free app does not necessarily mean giving the app away for free. Mostly it means that seller has sources, sponsors for a majority or paid add-ons. Despite being paid add-on’s are a great way of making money, enhancing your app with sponsored, high quality, free and usable materials increases the value of your product. If you have a free app, you can always benefit from being on the top free list on App Store. On each update you get back to that list -update downloads counts same as first time downloads as well- which is the perfect way to get the attention you desire. Being on the top free apps list makes sponsors happy and it gets easier to get new sponsors. Always start with big companies on the market. Better sponsors have better market value and increases the value of your product as well. Besides, having a major sponsor for 6-12 months will most possibly cover the initial expenses to launch up the 1.0 version of the app.
